Best Hostels In Phnom Penh
Phnom Penh is absolutely worth a visit and a must-stop on every backpacking Cambodia itinerary. This vibrant capital is rich in history, culture, and delicious food.
While there are countless types of hostels scattered around the city, these are the best backpacker hostels in Phnom Penh:

1. Mad Monkey Phnom Penh
Best For: Overall The Best Hostel In Phnom Penh
Mad Monkey Phnom Penh is overall the best hostel in Phnom Penh and a go-to destination for backpackers seeking a lively and engaging social atmosphere.
They offer a variety of room options to suit every traveler, from comfortable dormitory rooms to private accommodations. The beds are large and comfortable, with lockers under the bed that can fit your backpack.
I stayed in the female dorm and a 6-person mixed dorm, and both were spacious and clean with comfortable beds.
I loved my stay here so much that I extended even when the female dorm was fully booked!
Like other Mad Monkey hostels, they organize social events and parties basically every night.
However, don’t be swayed by the ‘party hostel’ label if that’s not your scene.
While Mad Monkey Phnom Penh caters to the fun-loving crowd, the music shuts off promptly at 11 pm, ensuring everyone can enjoy a peaceful night’s sleep.
They also organize day trips and tours, so you get to visit Phnom Penh and the surrounding areas with your new friends. I joined their S22 tour and it was great value for money!
It’s the perfect blend of social interaction and tranquility.

2. Onederz Phnom Penh
Best For: Solo Female Travelers
Onederz Phnom Penh is another one of the best Phnom Penh hostels, particularly for solo female travelers in Cambodia who prefer a calmer place to stay.
The hostel’s location is nestled in the heart of the city, right next to the Phnom Penh Night Market and the river.
They offer both dormitory-style rooms and private rooms with comfortable beds. Each bed has a privacy curtain, reading light, shelf, and power outlet for convenience.
The hostel consists of two buildings, with the main building housing the pool and reception. If these amenities are important to you, I recommend choosing rooms in that building.
I stayed in the female-only dorm in the main building, and it was comfortable, spacious, and clean.
One of the standout features of this hostel is its rooftop pool, where you can take a refreshing dip while enjoying breathtaking views of the river and city skyline.
A thing to note for solo travelers is they don’t organize as many social events as Mad Monkey. This difference might make it slightly more challenging to meet other travelers outside of your room.
However, there are still communal spaces including the rooftop deck, which offer the perfect opportunity to mix and mingle with fellow hostel guests.
Best Hostels In Siem Reap
Siem Reap is truly the backpacker hub of Cambodia, with Angkor Wat as one of the top reasons to visit Cambodia.
Whether you’re seeking a bustling social atmosphere or a peaceful retreat, here are the top hostels in Siem Reap:

3. Lub D Siem Reap
Best For: Overall The Best Hostel In Siem Reap
Lub D Siem Reap is easily the best backpackers hostel Cambodia has to offer, just a 5-minute walk from the city center of Siem Reap.
They offer both dorms and private rooms. I stayed in the female-only dorm, and their dorm rooms are some of the most spacious I’ve ever stayed in.
The attention to detail is impressive, and the blend of comfort and style creates a welcoming environment that you will appreciate after a long day of sightseeing. They even have actual stairs leading to the top bunks!
Moreover, their pool is a great place to unwind, offering a serene spot to cool off and relax.
One of my favorite things about Lub D Siem Reap is that the hostel organizes an array of daily social activities that enable you to make hostel friends even if you’re traveling to Cambodia solo.
Additionally, they offer a variety of tours in the region, making it easy for travelers to explore and experience the local culture and breathtaking landscapes.
If you’re tired after a day of exploring they have a kitchen and make vegan Cambodian dishes too!
They also sell tickets for transportation in Cambodia and to neighboring countries, so you don’t have to worry about figuring out the routes yourself.
I booked my bus from Siem Reap to Kampot through them, even when the option wasn’t available online!
4. The Twizt Lifestyle Hostel
Best For: Flashpackers
The Twizt Lifestyle Hostel is the perfect hostel for flashpackers seeking luxury on a budget.
This chic hostel radiates a unique blend of sophistication and relaxed ambiance, when you enter the lobby you’d think you got into a luxurious 5-star hotel!

Dorm rooms are spacious and tastefully decorated with comfortable beds and private lockers. Top bunks even have stairs instead of ladders!
A friend of mine stayed here and absolutely loved her stay. She said it is a perfect place for those who already have their Siem Reap itinerary packed with activities and are seeking a tranquil environment to unwind after a long day of exploring.
One of the key attractions of The Twizt is its attractive pool area. The rooftop swimming pool offers a refreshing break from the Cambodian heat and is surrounded by comfortable sun loungers.
While it’s certainly possible to connect with other travelers, it’s worth noting that The Twizt is not known for organizing social activities like some other hostels in Siem Reap.
5. Mad Monkey Siem Reap
Best For: Social Vibes And Meeting Other Travelers
Mad Monkey Siem Reap is always the go-to backpacker hostel Siem Reap offers for those looking for fun social vibes and engaging experiences.

The hostel also features a large swimming pool, popular bar and restaurant, serving up delicious local and international dishes and a variety of refreshing drinks.
One slight drawback is that Mad Monkey Siem Reap is a bit further from the city center than most other hostels in the area. However, that shouldn’t be a problem as you’ll easily meet other travelers to go out with you.
6. The Funky Village
Best For: Party Backpackers
The Funky Village is the place to be for party lovers in Siem Reap. This hostel offers a lively and fun atmosphere, with daily events and parties that will keep you entertained throughout your stay.
They also have a swimming pool, perfect for cooling off during the day or enjoying some drinks at night. The hostel’s rooftop bar is a popular spot for socializing and meeting new people.
This is also one of the cheapest hostels in Siem Reap, so it is a great option if you’re keeping the cost of travel to Cambodia low.
The dorms are clean and comfortable, with lockers provided for each guest. The hostel also offers private rooms for those seeking a more intimate experience.
The Funky Village may not be the best option for those looking for a quiet or peaceful stay, as it can get quite loud during the night. But if you’re up for a good time and meeting like-minded travelers, this is the place for you.
Overall, The Funky Village is a great choice for backpackers looking to have a good time in Siem Reap.
7. Onederz Hostel Siem Reap
Best For: Digital Nomads
Onederz Hostel Siem Reap is another addition to the popular Onederz chain, maintaining the same standards of cleanliness and comfort in its accommodation options.
This hostel offers a variety of room types to cater to various guest preferences – from mixed dorms and female-only dorms to private rooms for those seeking more seclusion.
The rooms here are well-kept, and spacious, featuring large lockers for secure storage of personal belongings.
However, the standout feature of this hostel is undoubtedly its amazing facilities, boasting not one but three inviting swimming pools, making it a perfect refuge from the city’s hustle and bustle.
While Onederz Hostel Siem Reap might not be the most social hostel in town, it’s an excellent choice for digital nomads and others looking for a work-friendly environment.

Kampot, once a sleepy riverside town, has been steadily gaining traction on the backpacking Cambodia route.
Known for its laid-back vibe against the backdrop of serene river views, Kampot’s popularity has led to a growing hostel scene:

Best For: Best Social Hostel In Kampot
For solo travelers coming to Kampot, there’s no better place to stay than Karma Traders Hostel.
You can stay in both dormitory-style accommodations and private rooms. While the facilities are relatively basic compared to the fancy hostels in Siem Reap, they are clean and comfortable
Deluxe pods are certainly worth the extra few bucks, as they offer added privacy that is highly appreciated, especially considering they don’t have female-only rooms.
You also get a personal locker, ensuring that your belongings are safely stored during your stay.
Karma Traders is the ideal spot for those who seek to meet new people and share experiences.

Also, with their daily kayak and snorkeling tour, you can explore the best of the island.
11. Nest Beach Club
Best For: Party Backpackers
Nest Beach Clubs hostel is best known for its parties, especially the renowned “Nestival” – a day-long event taking place on Saturdays with beach Olympics, all-night party, and fire show.
The hostel only offers large dorm rooms, split into two buildings. It’s important to note that the facilities are quite basic and tend to be more expensive than on the mainland.
However, this is a typical characteristic of island living and should be expected when visiting Koh Rong. Being so close to the beach makes up for it!
Even if you don’t come there for Nestival, something is happening each night, making it the ultimate social hub for those looking to connect with fellow travelers.
You can also join in on a variety of fun island activities like jungle trekking, scuba diving, or snorkeling excursions.

The hostel offers a range of organized activities to explore the island, including daily boat trips. You’ll have something to do even on lazy days, with a pool and games to keep you occupied.
Another perk is that you can pay by card here, as you’ll notice it’s mostly just cash in Cambodia and not many ATMs around.

The Cliff Hostel is your perfect getaway if you’re seeking tranquility amidst nature.
This hostel is known for its relaxing and chill ambiance, offering a much-needed respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

As the name suggests, it is positioned at the top of the cliff and offers unparalleled views, especially at sunset.
However, being perched up high means you’re a bit far from the pier, but it is worth the walk. Also, you’re still just about a 10-minute walk from the beach.

Should You Book Cambodia Hostels In Advance?
The answer depends on when you are traveling and which type of room you want to book.
If you want to stay in female-only dorms or private rooms in the best hostels in Cambodia, you should book at least several days in advance.
I was backpacking Cambodia in the rainy season when there were fewer travelers, and female-only dorms would still sell out a couple of days in advance, especially for weekends!
If you’re open to staying in larger mixed dorm rooms, you can be more spontaneous with your booking.
Keep in mind that during high season or for specific events, it’s best to secure your bed as early as possible. Basically, everyone wants to stay in the top backpacker hostels in Cambodia.
