So, Is There Uber In Cambodia?

The short answer is: NO, there is no Uber in Cambodia. 

Uber is not illegal in Cambodia. It simply does not operate in the country. If you download the Uber app, you won’t be able to use it to order a ride in Cambodia.

Interestingly, there was a short period in 2017 when Uber was in Cambodia. 

However, in 2018, Uber faced challenges due to the already-established local competition and sold all its Southeast Asian operations to a Singapore-based company, Grab.

So, as of 2025, Uber is not available in Cambodia.

Uber Alternatives In Cambodia

Just because there is no Uber in Cambodia doesn’t mean you have to go back to the old-fashioned way of hailing a taxi or a tuk-tuk on the street every time you need a ride. 

If you’re backpacking Cambodia on a budget, you’ll be glad to know there are several Uber alternatives in Cambodia.

Grab In Cambodia

If you’ve been backpacking Southeast Asia, you surely came across the most popular taxi-hailing app in the region – Grab. 

If you’re wondering if Grab is in Cambodia, the answer is YES! Just like in most other Southeast Asian countries, there is Grab in Cambodia.

This Singapore-based company works on the same principle as Uber. You download the app, add your card details, and order a ride!

You can order a tuk-tuk (the cheapest option) or an actual car. I love that you can pay in-app, so you don’t have to worry about which currency to use in Cambodia.

I used Grab while traveling around Cambodia, and it worked perfectly in all tourist areas.

PassAPP In Cambodia

PassApp is another popular ride-hailing app in Cambodia, and it is available in Phnom Penh, Siemreap, Sihanoukville, Battambang, Kampong Cham, and Kampot.

Just like Grab, you just need to download the app and follow the same steps to request a ride.

I didn’t use PassApp as I already had Grab on my phone from 2 months of backpacking Southeast Asia, but it is a Cambodian company, so it is a good option to support the local economy.

How To Use Ridesharing Apps In Cambodia?

To use any ridesharing app in Cambodia, you will need to download the app and register.

You need a phone number to receive the confirmation code – this doesn’t need to be a Cambodian number!

However, I suggest getting a local SIM card or e-SIM so you can use the app when you’re out and about. I paid only $10 for 20GB of data that was valid for 2 weeks in Cambodia.

If you set up your Grab account while backpacking Singapore, Vietnam, or any other Southeast Asian country, it will still work in Cambodia!

The app will now show prices in different currencies and a map of your location in Cambodia.

I suggest you add your card details if you want to pay in-app. I almost exclusively paid in-app as drivers are notorious for not having change.

Once you have downloaded the app and set up your account, simply open it when you need a ride and enter your destination.

You can choose whether you want to pay in cash or in-app when ordering a ride.

Once your ride is confirmed, the app will show you the driver’s details and estimated arrival time. 

If you need to communicate with the driver, there is an option to message them through the app.

To stay safe, ALWAYS check the license plate of the vehicle that came to pick you up. The driver should tell you your name, you should not be asking if they are here to pick you up. 

After the ride, you’ll get the option to tip your driver.

Why Should You Use Rideshare Apps In Cambodia?

I think rideshare apps like Uber and Grab are fantastic for your backpacking Southeast Asia budget. 

As public transport in Cambodian cities is not well-developed, you’ll depend a lot on taking taxis to get around if you don’t rent a scooter.

My problem is that I hate negotiating prices with drivers, and you know that the first price they quote is usually highly inflated.

With apps, you know exactly how much you should pay for the ride!

It eliminates that awkward stage where you feel taken advantage of or your driver is rude because they hoped they’d get more money.

Also, if you don’t have cash, you can simply pay in-app. 

Another perk of using the apps is safety, and I am always aware of safety as a solo female traveler.  

You know exactly who the driver is that picks you up and the route he is driving. If you had a bad experience, there is someone you can complain to.

Should You Order a Tuk Tuk Or A Car?

When using the app, you’ll notice that you have the option to choose between a tuk-tuk or a car for your ride.

I found it interesting that there are no scooters like I was used to for getting around Bali.

Tuk-tuks are the most popular and traditional mode of transportation in Cambodia.

I only ordered tuk-tuks during my travels as they are significantly cheaper and smaller, so they don’t get stuck in traffic.

However, tuk-tuks do have some drawbacks. 

The seating capacity is limited, typically accommodating only two to three passengers comfortably; they are also open-air, which can be uncomfortable on dustier roads or during the rainy season in Cambodia.

Hence, for extended trips or larger groups, you might want to consider opting for a car.

Ordering a car may be a better choice for longer trips, like getting to Phnom Penh airport from the city center.

Also, cars are useful if you’re in a group and you didn’t exactly pack light for Cambodia.

Other Ways To Get Around In Cambodia

If you don’t have mobile data to book a ride because you didn’t get a local SIM or apps are not available in some remote Cambodia bucket list regions, there are alternative ways to get around Cambodia. 

Public Transport In Cambodia

Local buses are basically only available in the capital city, Phnom Penh.

These buses are a budget-friendly way to get around the bustling city, with fares under $1.

Low fares make public buses a fantastic choice if you’re keeping your Cambodia travel budget to a minimum.

You can even download a dedicated app that provides real-time updates on bus arrivals.

Hailing A Tuk Tuk 

If you don’t have mobile data, hailing a tuk-tuk straight from the streets is also a great option.

They’re everywhere, so it’s super convenient to catch a ride without needing to use an app.

The only thing to keep in mind is that the drivers usually ask for a higher fare compared to what you’d pay with a ride-hailing app. 

To avoid overpaying, checking the average local prices beforehand is a good idea.

Ordering A Taxi From Your Accommodation

Finally, if all else fails, you can always ask your accommodation to order you a taxi. 

Most hotels and guesthouse hosts have a friend or a family member who is a tuk-tuk driver, and they arrange affordable fares for their guests.
