Poland is home to 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites (15 cultural and 2 natural), from incredibly well-preserved medieval old towns to stunning salt mines.

I loved the laid-back vibes, cobblestone streets, and countless dwarf statues to look for throughout the city.
Gdansk
The coastal town of Gdansk nicknamed the pearl of the Baltic, has the same colorful seafront houses as Denmark, but for a fraction of the price!

Croatia is my home country, but I’m not biased when I say it is one of the best places to go backpacking in Europe!
So, why visit Croatia?
This small country is so diverse that you can spend one day on the island on the beach and the next one admiring the waterfalls in the mountains.
The best thing about Croatia is that it is so compact, so backpacking in Croatia is relatively comfortable without long bus rides.
While I must admit the prices have gone up in recent years, Croatia is still affordable compared to other coastal European countries and one of the best European summer destinations.
At the same time, continental Croatia is still mostly undiscovered by tourists, affordable to travel, and the perfect place to get away from the crowds.

It is hard to pick the top 5, but these Croatian cities should be part of your European backpacking trip.

The vibrant country of Spain is one of the most fun countries to backpack in Europe!
From colorful Andalucia to Barcelona beaches and the capital of Madrid, there is something to see in every part of the country.
One of the reasons backpackers love Spain is the laid-back atmosphere in this country. The days start quite late, people are easygoing and friendly and they love to party until early morning.
If your idea of backpacking Europe in the summer is to sip sangria and dance until the morning, Spain will be one of your best backpacking trips in Europe.
The country is large but easy to get around, with reliable train and bus networks. For places farther away, you can often find cheap domestic flights.
Spanish cuisine is delicious, and foodies will love snacking on tapas that come free with their drink when backpacking Andalusia.

It’s a hard task picking only 5 places to visit when backpacking in Spain, as the country offers so much!
Barcelona
If you visit one city in Spain, that should be Barcelona. This vibrant city, with a charming city center and endless beaches, is the epitome of a summer backpacking destination.
Known as one of the best European cities for nightlife, numerous hostels, and plenty of activities, Barcelona is a must-stop on a backpacking Spain itinerary.
Sevilla
Colorful Sevilla is my favorite city in Spain, despite scorching hot summers! It is the perfect place to indulge in the laid-back Spanish lifestyle.
Stroll the cobblestone streets admiring the architecture and bright orange trees, relax for siesta and sip sangria, and dance until late night hours.
Madrid
The capital of Spain is one of the most beautiful European capitals. Despite its size, you’ll find many areas throughout the city center that feel cozy, with lots of pedestrian-friendly streets.
Some of the best things to do include visiting Retiro Park, seeing the Royal Palace, or watching a Real Madrid football game.
Granada
Andalucia is my favorite region of Spain, so I had to add another spot to your Andalucia itinerary. Granada’s Alhambra is one of the most impressive historical monuments in Spain.
This well-preserved palace dating back to the 14th century was one of the finalists for the New 7 Wonders of the World, so it is well worth the visit!
Canary Islands
Spain is home to many islands, including some you might not think are part of the country. For example, the magical Canary Islands are situated off the coast of Africa, closer to Morocco than Spain!

If you’re young, broke, and want to dip your toes into the world of backpacking Europe, look no further than Romania!
Romania was the first country I backpacked with my friend, which feels like decades ago! It lived up to all my backpacking Europe expectations and more.
So, why is Romania one of the best countries to backpack in Europe?
Romania is a relatively small country with diverse landscapes and plenty of things to do.
Whether you want to see the beaches, hike the mountains, discover medieval castles, or enjoy bustling city life – Romania has it all!
It is easy to get around Romania as a backpacker since public transport is reliable and affordable. It is one of the cheapest countries in Europe, perfect if you’re on a tight budget.
Top 5 places to visit when backpacking Romania
Bucharest
I was told to leave Bucharest as quickly as possible, and I think that was a great mistake.
I enjoyed strolling the pedestrian-friendly city center, seeing the enormous Parliament building, and just appreciating the city’s unusual Eastern European metropolis vibe.
Brasov
Most people go to Brasov to see the famous Dracula’s castle, but this small town is such a versatile city!
Surrounded by mountains, Brasov is within a short distance from Rasnov Citadel, Bran Castle, and numerous hiking spots!
Sibiu
This picture-perfect Romanian town is a must-stop on your backpacking Romania itinerary.
You’ll adore the picturesque city center, with colorful houses with unique “eye-like” roof windows and cobblestone streets.
Sinaia
The small city of Sinaia is home to the most recognizable Romanian castle – Peleș Castle. The rest of the city isn’t something to write home about, but Sinaia is a must stop at least as a day trip.
7 Ladders Hike
I was debating between the 7 Ladders Hike and the Transfagarasan road, and while the route is one of the most scenic drives you can experience, you do need a car.
On the other hand, the 7 Ladder Hike is easily accessible by bus and a great intro into Romanian incredible nature.
Best Hostels in Romania
- Bucharest: T5 Social (⭐ 9.6/10)
- Brasov: Secret Boutique Hostel (⭐ 9.6/10)
5. PORTUGAL
Portugal is one of the last countries I visited in Europe, and I like to think that I’ve saved the best for last.
Backpacking Portugal is one of the best adventures you’ll have in Europe.
While it is possible to see all the main highlights of Portugal in 7 days if you’re short on time, I’d spend at least two weeks in this vibrant country.
Lisbon and Porto are lively at any time of the year, with their iconic yellow trams and incredible viewpoints.
Portugal is often on the list of the cheapest places to backpack in Europe. However, that greatly depends on the time of the year you visit, as the prices fluctuate seasonally.
If you’re backpacking Algarve in the low season, you can easily find cheap accommodation throughout the region.
Trying to find hostels for under 20€ a night in high season? Impossible.
Top 5 places to visit when backpacking Portugal
Lisbon
The vibrant capital of Portugal is a must-visit on your Portugal itinerary.
From an incredible culinary scene to a maze of cobblestone streets and incredible viewpoints, Lisbon is one of the most magical European capitals.
Porto
Porto is easily one of my favorite cities in Europe. I love a good viewpoint, and there are so many stunning ones in Porto.
The city is so photogenic with lots of things to see, including beaches, and it is close to the Duoro wine region.
Algarve
The south of Portugal has one of the most unique European coastlines. Unique rock formations and cliffs line the coast, with sandy coves perfect for swimming or surfing making for a perfect summer holiday destination.
Some cities you should add to your Algarve itinerary are Lagos, Albufeira, Faro, and Silves.
Sintra
The castles of Sintra are one of the most interesting in Europe, as these colorful castles look like nothing else you can see in Europe.
UNESCO recognized the whole region of Sintra as a cultural landscape of outstanding value.
Azores
Nicknamed the Hawaii of Europe, these unique islands are situated in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
Backpackers usually skip flying to the Azores, but they are well with the trip if you enjoy nature and hiking!

Belgium has a bad reputation for being rainy and boring. However, that couldn’t be further from the truth! Apart from the first statement though, it does rain a lot.
Backpacking Belgium is a perfect backpacking trip for first-time solo travelers and those who only have a short time for a trip.
The country is compact, easy to get around, everybody speaks English and there’s so much to see!
I studied in Leuven and fell in love with the cycling culture of Belgium, so maybe you’ll do like some of my friends and bike from Brussels to the Belgian coast!
Top 5 places to visit when backpacking Belgium
Brussels
The capital of Belgium is a compact and green capital, with plenty of things to do.
With 2 days in Brussels, you’ll have enough time to visit all the main highlights like the Grande Place, Manekken Pis, Mont des Arts, Atomium, and much more!
Ghent
Ghent is one of my favorite cities in Belgium, and it is still a hidden gem. You can visit Ghent on a day trip or spend a whole day in Ghent and you won’t be disappointed.
From sitting on the side of the river enjoying a drink to strolling cobblestone streets and admiring the medieval architecture.
Bruges
The best-known city in Belgium, Bruges is a real-life fairytale city. With Cobblestone streets, a stream passing through the city center, and picturesque bridges to sit and observe your surroundings, it is well worth the visit.
Consider spending a night in Bruges, so you get the city all to yourself before day trippers arrive.
Antwerp
The second largest city in Belgium is not on many people’s Belgium itinerary, which is a shame! Antwerp will win you over as soon as you step off the train, as it is home to one of the most beautiful train stations in Europe.
The city center is a mix of modern and medieval, and there is even a red-light district (just so you’re not as surprised as I was if you stumble upon it).
Dinant
Most people stay in Flanders, the northern region of Belgium. However, Wallonia has some hidden gems to offer as well.
For example, the small riverside town of Dinant is a great day trip from Brussels idea.

7. ALBANIA
Albania is one of the newer additions to the list of top backpacking destinations Europe offers.
Albania is one of the cheapest countries to visit in Europe, and it is a perfect budget alternative to Croatia and Greece in the summer.
This small Balkan country has every type of landscape you could imagine, from endless beaches to mountains. All of that for an incredibly low price compared to the rest of the coastal European destinations
The beauty of Albania is that it is still kind of a hidden gem, and it is not overrun by tourists. The locals are friendly and helpful, and it feels authentic to visit.
The country is getting more popular as one of the cheapest European beach destinations, so head there while it is still quiet!
Top 5 places to visit when backpacking Albania
Tirana
The capital of Albania might not be the most beautiful city in Europe, but it is an important element in the story of Albania, so it is a must-visit to understand the country and its history.
Berat
Berat is one of the most beautiful cities in Albania, also known as the city of thousand windows due to the many windows on the iconic houses overlooking the river.
It is UNESCO listed as one of the prime examples of Ottoman period architecture.
Gjirokastër
Albania’s historic stone town is one of the most picturesque towns in the country.
Himarë
This seaside city is backpacker’s alternative to the more popular Sarande. While both towns have amazing beaches, HImare tends to be more budget-friendly.
Best Hostels in Albania
- Tirana: Vanilla Sky Boutique Hostel (⭐ 9.3/10)
- Berat: Maya Hostel (⭐ 9.6/10)
- Gjirokastër: Stone City (⭐ 10/10)
- HImare: Himara Relax Hostel (⭐ 8.8/10)
8. GREECE
Most people visiting Greece fly directly to the Greek islands of Mykonos or Santorini, completely ignoring the rest of this incredible, ancient country.
Backpacking Greece might seem intimidating, as it is hard to decide where exactly to go with so many islands scattered around the country.
However, Greece is one of the best backpacking countries in Europe!
Continental Greece is one of the cheapest European regions, with so many historical sites to admire.
The positive side of having so many islands in Greece is that if backpacking the Cyclades is out of budget, you can easily go for cheaper Greek islands like Corfu or Crete!
Top 5 places to visit when backpacking Greece
Athens
The capital of Greece is like an open-air museum. Everywhere you look you’ll see ruins and monuments from ancient times.
Athens is a bustling city with plenty of things to do, lively nightlife, and surprisingly affordable!
Santorini
Usually, on top of everybody’s travel bucket list, it is possible to visit Santorini on a budget.
In fact, there are many hostels throughout the island and the best things to do in Santorini are completely free!
Paros
Paros is my favorite Greek island, as it has everything you’d need for a perfect island escape.
Your Paros itinerary will include going for drinks in the upscale fishing village of Noussa, beautiful beaches, the laid-back capital of Parikia, and lots of delicious Greek food.
Thessaloniki
As one of the oldest Greek cities with a rich history, Thessaloniki has so much to offer.
From ancient cultural monuments to incredible beaches, the north of Greece is underrated, but certainly worth a visit.
Corfu
Another island on the list! As you can see, island hopping is all the rage in Greece! Corfu is located close to the Albanian border and is one of the cheapest Greek islands to visit.

9. FRANCE
Finally, we have France, the country I’ve been living in for over 4 years now (Are you starting to think I have a soft spot for the countries I’ve lived in?).
As one of the biggest countries in Europe, France is such a diverse country and so worth a visit if you have a budget for it!
From the capital of Paris to coastal towns along the Cote d’Azur and countless castles and vineyards, there is something for everyone in France.
However, the downside of backpacking France, and the reason I debated whether it should be on this list or not, is that France is one of the most expensive countries in Europe to travel.
France is a large country, and trains can get quite pricey if you don’t book well in advance.
So, if you want to travel to France on a budget: book your trains well in advance, check Flixbus, or opt for an Interrail France pass if you want to be spontaneous!
Top 5 places to visit when backpacking France
Paris
Paris needs no introduction. It is the most visited place in the world, and despite people saying it is overrated, I think it is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.
I love the winding streets of Montmartre, bustling terraces, and walking along the Seine admiring the Eiffel Tower.
Strasbourg
Located on a mall island, the city center of Strasbourg looks like it came straight out of a fairytale.
If you visit Strasbourg in winter, you have the best Christmas market in Europe. If you visit Strasbourg in summer, rent a bike and enjoy this incredible city.
Bordeaux
Known as the sleeping beauty of France, Bordeaux finally started to get recognition for its beauty.
Whether you want to explore the UNESCO-listed city center or take day trips from Bordeaux to the vineyards, you won’t be disappointed!
Nice
While the whole of Cote d’Azur is spectacular, NIce might be the most backpacker-friendly town among them.
It is a fabulous beach destination and well-connected for day trips to some of the most beautiful French villages.
Étretat
France has many natural wonders to discover, but Étretat cliffs might be the most unique. These stunning rock formations and cliffs make for a great day in nature.
Best Hostels in France
- Paris: The People – Paris Belleville (ex Les Piaules) (⭐ 8.6/10)
- Strasbourg: The People Strasbourg (⭐ 8.9/10)
- Bordeaux: Central Hostel (⭐ 9.2/10)
- Nice: Antares Hostel (⭐ 8.3/10)
You don’t have to worry about the age limit in hostels in France, they are popular among all budget travelers!
