Paros or Mykonos: Which Is Better In 2026?

A few years ago, Paros started gaining popularity as a more affordable alternative to Mykonos. Since island hopping in the Cyclades is one of my favorite summer holidays, I knew I had to compare them. 

Mykonos is one of the most expensive Greek islands, known for its celebrity-studded nightlife and luxury villas. 

Paros, on the other hand, is much more in line with what I personally look for in a summer trip. It’s an island where you can easily spend a week beach hopping and sightseeing.

So if you’re trying to decide if you should visit Paros or Mykonos, the choice really comes down to what kind of experience you want, because they’re not interchangeable at all.

Paros vs Mykonos: Quick Answer & My Experience

If you’re short on time, here’s the quick version:

I personally prefer Paros, and I think it’s the better option for a longer, more relaxed summer holiday.

It has that classic Greek island feel, where you can explore different villages, go to the beach, have nice dinners, and still feel like you’re actually switching off.

Mykonos is a completely different experience.

It’s much more focused on nightlife, beach clubs, and that upscale, see-and-be-seen kind of atmosphere. And to really enjoy it, you do need a bigger budget.

It’s easily one of the most expensive islands in the Cyclades, and there’s a reason it attracts celebrities and people who are there to spend money.

Personally, I felt a bit out of place there. It’s not that I didn’t like it, it just didn’t feel like my kind of summer holiday. It felt more like a place where people go to dress up, go out, and be part of the scene.

Honestly, if you’re deciding between Mykonos or Paros, it really comes down to your travel style. 

If your ideal trip involves cocktails at upscale beachfront bars, dressing up every night, and going all in on the experience, you’ll probably love it.

Atmosphere & Vibe

• Winner: Depends on what you’re looking for

The atmosphere is where the biggest difference between Paros and Mykonos really shows.

I spent 3 days in Paros, and it felt like a proper summer holiday. I was relaxing and enjoying that classic Greek island atmosphere. You can go from a beach morning to wandering around a village, then end the day with a nice dinner without it ever feeling like too much.

Even in places like Naoussa, which definitely has a more upscale feel, it still felt relaxed and enjoyable rather than intense.

Mykonos feels completely different, at least in high season.

It’s much more about the scene. There’s a strong focus on going out, dressing up, and being part of that whole social atmosphere. It’s fun, but it’s not low-key.

Mykonos feels like one of those destinations where people don’t really think about prices and just want to fully lean into the experience.

That’s not a bad thing at all; it just depends on what you’re looking for.

If you want a calm, laid-back island where you can truly relax, Paros is the better choice.

If you want something more high-class, social, and a bit more “extra,” then Mykonos might suit you more.

Tourist Attractions

• Winner: Paros

If you like having different things to do throughout your trip, Paros is the clear winner.

One of the things I really liked is that your days don’t all feel the same. There are so many things to do in Paros, and you can explore different villages, go beach hopping, rent a bike, or just walk around and discover new spots.

Places like Parikia feel more local and laid-back, while Naoussa has more of a lively, restaurant-focused vibe. It’s easy to mix things up.

Mykonos isn’t really about sightseeing in the same way.

Yes, you’ve got iconic spots like the windmills, Little Venice, and if you’re into history, you can also visit Delos on a day trip. But overall, the “activities” are more about beach clubs, restaurants, and nightlife rather than exploring.

Nightlife

• Winner: Mykonos (but Paros is also good)

Let’s be honest, this is where Mykonos wins.

It’s one of the most famous party destinations in Europe, and if nightlife is a big part of your trip, it’s hard to beat.

Beach clubs, DJs, late nights… that’s what Mykonos is known for, and it delivers.

That said, I don’t think Paros nightlife is as far behind as people think. I was told by the locals that people come from Naxos to Paros every weekend!

Naoussa, especially, has a really fun nightlife scene that I quite enjoyed. You can go for drinks, move between bars, and still have a great night without it feeling chaotic or over the top.

Getting There & Getting Around

• Winner: Mykonos

Mykonos has an international airport, which makes it easier to visit. You can fly to Mykonos from many European cities, and it’s especially a good deal in the shoulder season when flights are quite affordable. 

Paros also has an airport, but you’ll connect through Athens. However, most people take a ferry from Athens or other Cyclades. I took a ferry from Naxos to Paros.

When it comes to getting around the islands, you can rent a car, use buses, or even base yourself in one area and still see quite a bit. 

I visited Paros without a car, and didn’t feel like I needed one. Public transport works great if you’re on a budget, but you’ll have to plan your itinerary a bit more closely. 

In Mykonos, you also have public transport, but getting around felt a bit more hectic, especially in high season, with crowded buses and expensive taxis.

Accommodation Options

Winner: Paros

Paros is the winner when it comes to accommodation, especially if you’re thinking about value for money.

Overall, it’s cheaper than Mykonos, and you just get more for what you pay.

Because the island has several popular areas, like Naoussa or Parikia, you’ve got way more choice depending on the kind of stay you want. You can go for something lively, something more local, or something quieter.

I also came across some really impressive luxury villas in Paros, the kind of places you’d expect to find in Mykonos, but at much more reasonable prices.

And if you’re willing to rent a car and stay a bit outside the main towns, you can find some incredible high-end stays that feel much more private and relaxed.

Mykonos definitely has amazing luxury hotels, but that’s kind of the baseline there, and the prices reflect it. Of course, you can find budget options in Mykonos too, but I found the value for money is better in Paros.

Cost of Travel

• Winner: Paros, but it depends on your travel style

This one really depends on you.

At the end of the day, you know your budget best. You can go to Mykonos and grab food from supermarkets, or you can go to Paros and eat at upscale restaurants every day and spend a lot.

That said, overall prices in Mykonos are slightly higher for the same quality of service.

Restaurants, drinks, and especially beach clubs tend to be more expensive, and while sometimes it’s just €10 more here and there, it definitely adds up over a few days, especially if you’re not traveling solo.

Paros felt a bit more affordable in comparison. You’ve got options at different price points, and it’s easier to control how much you’re spending without feeling like you’re missing out on the experience.

So while both islands can be done on different budgets, Mykonos naturally leans more expensive.

Paros is better for you if…

Paros is my favorite, and I think it’s the better choice if you want a well-rounded summer holiday.

It’s ideal if you like having a mix of beach time, exploring, good food, and a bit of nightlife without it taking over your entire trip.

I found it much more relaxing overall, and it’s the kind of place where you can stay for a week (or more) and not get bored.

It also works really well if you don’t want your trip to revolve around spending a lot of money just to enjoy it.

Mykonos is better for you if…

Mykonos is the right choice if your idea of fun is more about the experience and the atmosphere.

If you want to dress up, go out, have cocktails at upscale beachfront spots, and fully lean into that luxury, party-style holiday, you’ll probably love it.

It’s also a great destination if nightlife is a priority and you want something more high-energy. 

Interestingly, it’s also a good choice if you want to visit the Cyclades in April or later in October, as it stays lively longer than most other islands.

Should You Visit Both?

You can, but I don’t think you need to.

Unlike Paros and Antiparos, these two don’t really complement each other in the same way.

If you’re curious, you could include it as a short stop or part of a bigger island-hopping trip, but I wouldn’t sacrifice time in Paros just to fit it in.

Final Thoughts: Mykonos or Paros

So, should you visit Paros or Mykonos?

For me, Paros is the clear winner. It just felt more like the kind of summer holiday I actually enjoy, relaxed, varied, and easy to settle into.

Mykonos is fun in its own way, but it’s more about the scene, the nightlife, and the experience, and that comes with a certain price tag and atmosphere.
